Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

Recover Faster

After a heart attack or major cardiac procedure, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation enables you to return more quickly to normal. It can also help prevent future cardiovascular issues by teaching heart-healthy habits to last a lifetime.

In partnership with Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, Montefiore Nyack Hospital offers a 2,500-square-foot Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center located on the ground floor of the hospital. The facility is staffed by experts in the field and offers the latest exercise equipment, a locker and changing area and dedicated parking.

Building Healthier Hearts

After a cardiac event or heart surgery, the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center helps you resume an active, heart-healthy lifestyle.

The Benefits of Cardiopulmonary Rehab

Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation can help you improve your cardiovascular fitness and quality of life and reduce the likelihood that you’ll have to be readmitted to the hospital. Other benefits include:

  • Increased activity and exercise tolerance
  • Reduced symptoms of angina, dyspnea and fatigue
  • Improved blood lipid and blood sugar levels
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Healthier eating habits and weight loss

Who’s eligible?

The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center accepts referrals from your cardiologist or primary care physician. Patients with any of these heart issues may be good candidates for cardiac rehab:

  • Heart attack
  • Angina
  • Angioplasty or stent placement

Customized exercise programs

At the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital, an exercise physiologist will develop an individualized program specifically for you. Usually, the program will consist of sessions three times a week for up to 12 weeks—a total of 36 hours. The exercise program is supervised by a board-certified cardiologist and includes ECG telemetry monitoring.

The 12-week rehabilitation program includes:

  • Aerobic exercise to promote endurance
  • Resistance training to improve musculoskeletal strength and flexibility
  • Instruction in self-monitoring skills that will enable you to assess your exercise tolerance
  • Educational seminars on important aspects of cardiac well-being, such as smoking cessation and stress reduction
  • Nutritional guidance to help you adopt a heart-healthy diet

Joining the program

Your primary care provider or cardiologist can refer you to the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center. Many insurance plans, including Medicare, cover cardiac rehabilitation services for their beneficiaries. However, benefits may vary from plan to plan. Patients must confirm their coverage benefits and financial responsibility with their insurance carrier(s) before enrolling in our Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program.
