s long as I can remember, I couldn’t sleep more than two hours at a time. Each night, I would wake up, get up for a short while, and then fall back asleep…only to repeat the cycle two hours later. I was never tired during the day, so I didn’t give it a second thought.
few months ago, I started experiencing headaches. Now, I was never a person who got headaches, but I figured it was just part of getting older. I was taking painkillers constantly to help me get through the day.
got a break over Christmas, waking up pain-free, and I was fine through the holiday. The next day, however, I started feeling the headache come back while driving home from work. After it got worse and worse, my wife and I decided that it was time to visit the Emergency Room, where I ended up being diagnosed with very high blood pressure. Luckily, medication brought it under control very quickly, and the headaches went away.
ut, I noticed the strangest thing…I was sleeping more. Not a full night’s sleep, mind you, but longer stretches between waking up each night. I couldn’t figure it out! I spoke with my cardiologist, and he told me that sleep disorders can cause high blood pressure. I never knew about this hidden danger. Time to get it taken care of.
hen I spent the night in the Edythe Kurz Center for Sleep Medicine at Nyack Hospital, I felt like I entered a beautiful hotel. The rooms were great – comfortable, nicely decorated, and relaxing. The sleep technician explained the whole process to me, which made me feel even more at ease.
had the study, and left the next morning happy that I had taken the steps to find out what was wrong, and how I could be helped. I’m feeling much better.
ow, I feel like I’m “in the club” – half of the people I talk with either at work at my auto repair shop have a high blood pressure issue and don’t know that it can be caused by a sleep disorder. I’m following up with the Center, and taking a proactive approach to monitoring my health with my physicians. Work keeps me busy six full days a week; the rest of the time I like to spend with my wife, Maura and our four kids. I have a lot going on in my life, and I want to make sure that I’m able to fully enjoy our time together.
