Radiation Therapy
Radiation Therapy services features the most advanced conformal therapy modalities available, including the revolutionary TomoTherapy®, which is unprecedented in its ability to shape radiation delivery to the treatment area and avoid normal tissue. Nyack Hospital is one of only a few hospitals to offer this newest radiation therapy technology. In addition, the Center has broad experience with IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy), BAT (B-mode acquisition and targeting), stereotactic radiosurgery and brachytherapy.
Surgery We offer multi-specialty consultations and innovative treatments for patients with breast disease. For breast cancer patients, the goal of surgery is to remove the cancer. The surgical treatment of breast cancer depends on the type and stage of the disease, the patient’s age, menopausal status and overall health. Surgical interventions offered include:
Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy
Breast Conservation – Lumpectomy (sometimes referred to as an excisional biopsy or wide excision) is the removal of the lump in the breast and some of the surrounding tissue.
Partial or segmental mastectomy is the removal of the cancer as well as some of the breast tissue around the tumor and the lining over the chest muscle below the tumor. Lymph nodes under the arm may also be removed and checked.
Total or simple mastectomy is the removal of the whole breast. Sometimes lymph nodes under the arm are also taken out.
Modified radical mastectomy is the removal of the breast, many of the lymph nodes under the arm, the lining over the chest muscles, and sometimes part of the chest wall muscles.
Breast Reconstruction (making a new breast mound) may be done at the time of the mastectomy or sometime in the future. The breast may be made of the patient’s own (non-breast) tissue or by using implants.
