Joint Replacement Center at Nyack Hospital Achieves High Marks for Patient Satisfaction and Quality of Care
The Joint Replacement Center at Nyack Hospital most recently reached the 99th percentile in overall patient satisfaction as surveyed by Press Ganey Associates. Patients coming to the Center are asked about the care they received from nurses, physicians and other healthcare professionals, as well as questions related to the facility, food, discharge and admitting processes, and pain management, among others.
At the Joint Replacement Center at Nyack Hospital, pain management is addressed even before patients walk through the doors for their surgery . During the pre-hospitalization education program, patients meet with a member of the anesthesiology team who explains the various modalities utilized in minimizing pain. This team follows patients through their hospitalization to maintain this level of care. 100% of patients at the Joint Replacement Center rated how well their pain was controlled as “Good” or “Very Good” according to Press
Ganey, placing the Center in the 99th percentile as compared to other New York State hospitals.
The Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) is a multi-year national effort between leading public and private healthcare organizations that have the shared goal of reducing surgical complications by 25 percent by this year. SCIP is sponsored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), in collaboration with the American Hospital Association (AHA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and others.
According to the SCIP, surgical site infections (SSIs) are responsible for 14-16% of all hospital-acquired infections and are a common complication of care. Antibiotics are administered as a preventive measure to prevent infections and decrease complications post-surgically. By implementing an antibiotics regimen which includes selecting appropriate antibiotics for each patient, administering these antibiotics within one hour before surgical incision and discontinuing use within 24 hours, The Joint Replacement Center at Nyack Hospital achieved 100% compliance.
Without preventive measures being taken during hospitalization, deep vein thrombosis occurs in 25% and pulmonary embolism occurs in 7% of patients who undergo major surgical procedures. The Joint Replacement Center at Nyack Hospital has achieved 100% compliance with implementing SCIP-recommended treatments for its patients to reduce this risk.
Nyack Hospital is a 375-bed community acute care medical and surgical hospital located in Rockland County, NY. Founded in 1895, it is a member of the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System.
