Nyack Hospital Collaborative Review Article Published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases

Nyack, N.Y. April 28, 2014 -- Nyack Hospital is a principal in authoring a major scientific review article that has been published online ahead of print in the journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases.  Thisscientific body of work is entitled "Individualized antibiotic dosing for patients who are critically ill: challenges and potential solutions."

Andras Farkas, PharmD., clinical pharmacy manager at Nyack Hospital is one of the researchers who worked on this collaborative project done on behalf of The International Society of Anti-Infective Pharmacology and the Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics Study Group of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

The article sheds light on how antibiotic dosing for critically ill patients needs to be individualized to be most effective.  In this population, infections are associated with persistently poor clinical outcomes. Critically ill patients are often infected by pathogens that do not respond to typical dosing due to the nature of their illness and infecting organisms.

In the Review, the researchers explore the challenges related to patients and pathogens that contribute to inadequate antibiotic dosing and discuss how to implement a process for highly personalized antibiotic therapy that increases the accuracy of dosing and optimizes care for critically ill patients.

The Lancet is considered one of the foremost resources in the area of infectious diseases.
