Nyack Hospital provides two types of bariatric surgery: gastric band and gastric sleeve surgery.
Gastric band surgery is a minimally invasive procedure where the surgeon places a silicone band around the top of the stomach, which reduces the size of the area of the stomach where food collects. As a result, patients feel satisfied for longer periods of time after eating small amounts of food. There is no cutting or stapling of the stomach. The procedure is reversible if medically indicated.
During this procedure, the surgeon uses minimally invasive techniques to remove part of the stomach and create a new, smaller tube-shaped stomach or “sleeve.” As a result, patients feel satisfied for longer periods of time after eating small amounts of food. This procedure is not reversible.
